Platform Hire
Platform Types and Terminology
Here we take a look at portable variable-height platforms. For information about un-powered stationary platforms please see out article on work platform hire.
The range of platforms and the specialist terminology employed can be baffling to anyone considering platform hire. In short, there are three fundamental platform types, defined by the lift type – scissor, mast and boom. All three lift types provide up-and-down action. Mast lifts provide some limited sideways access by virtue of their offset cages, whilst boom lift platforms boast maximum flexibility. All platforms have wheeled maneuverability whether manual or driven. Both electric and diesel (gas in the USA) power sources are utilised.
There is a platform for every need, from small platforms for warehouse and supermarket applications to large tracked platforms for site construction.
Platform Hire – The Benefits
For users who have occasional requirements or whose needs change according to the task at hand, platform hire offers the most cost-effective and convenient solution. It is considerably less expensive than outright purchase even for extended hire durations.
Not only does platform hire provide the most affordable solution, the customer also benefits from the reassurance that that the product has been safety-checked by experienced and properly qualified personnel. The supplier is also well placed to offer the customer technical advice and training.
Whilst safety is of paramount importance, user comfort and ease of use must also be catered for. Correct platform selection is critical to suit each particular application. The enormous range of products available with platform hire and the supplier’s experience and knowledge enable the user to make an informed choice.
Platform Selection
Here is a quick guide to selecting the right platform for your needs, helping you to pick the most appropriate lift type, platform size and working height.
For applications requiring the operator to reach over objects, select a boom lift (articulated) model. Boom lifts generally have smaller platforms (strictly speaking, cages) than scissor lifts but have much greater flexibility. Typical applications include plant and machinery maintenance and warehouse/factory operations. Maximum working height measured at the platform varies by model from around 9m to over 40m. Actual reach height is generally quoted as 2m more, so a 10m platform height provides up to 12m reach.
Applications which simply require up-down platform motion are well served by scissor lift platforms. These have larger platforms or cages than boom lifts. Scissor lift platforms are well suited to factory applications, construction site and building work. Platform heights in the range 3m to over 30m are catered for. Larger units are self-propelled. For indoor use or where quiet operation is mandated, electrically operated units are ideal. Diesel power may be more appropriate for construction site use, and is ubiquitous on the heavy, top-end models.
Mast lift (telescopic) platforms fill the gap between scissor and boom products. Motion is up-down only, but the offset cage permits some limited over-reach and side access.
Finally, be aware that platform hire of low-level access and narrow-aisle variants for specialist applications is available. Demanding outdoor applications are also well catered for by ruggedized and tracked products. Vehicle-mounted units may be worth considering for multi-site use.
Platform Safety
It is essential to be aware of the relevant regulations and safety issues when considering platform hire. All personnel using the platform must have received the safety training applicable in their territory. |
